What it is

One of us holds every thread, so no one in your family has to.

A voyage is one day. Arranging it can take weeks of calls — to the funeral home, about permits, about boats and dates and who is bringing the flowers. In the days after a loss, that is a lot to ask of anyone.

Full-service planning hands all of it to us. You tell us what your person asked for; we turn it into a plan, coordinate every party involved, and see it through to the paperwork afterward.

It works with either service — a full-body burial at sea or an ash scattering — and the plan is shaped around your family, not a package.

How it works

Five steps, and you only have to take the first one.

For an ash scattering this can come together in a few days. For a full-body burial, plan on two to three weeks — there is paperwork to file, and we want a calm-water day.

  1. 01 · First call

    We listen

Tell us about your person and what they asked for. We answer every question and lay out the options plainly.

  2. 02 · The plan

    We agree on it together

Service, vessel, date, and who is coming — with a flat quote before you commit to anything.

  3. 03 · Coordination

    We make the calls

The funeral home, the permits, the ceremony details. The calls come to us, not to you.

  4. 04 · The voyage

    You are simply there

Your family boards. The captain runs the boat, the facilitator runs the ceremony, and the pace is yours.

  5. 05 · Afterward

    We close it out

A certificate with the GPS coordinates, any required filings, and a check-in call the following week.

What we handle

The logistics, the paperwork, and the small things no one thinks to ask about until the day.

i.

Funeral home liaison

We coordinate timing and the handoff at the dock directly with your funeral home, so you are never relaying messages between us.

ii.

Permit applications

Every permit the voyage needs, filed for you — including the paperwork when remains are coming in from out of state.

iii.

EPA filing

Required within thirty days of a full-body burial. We handle the paperwork; you receive a copy.

iv.

Vessel & date

We match the boat to the size of your party and choose the day with the captain, with an eye on the water.

v.

Family prep & logistics

Directions, timing, what to wear and bring, and what can be released into the water — shared ahead, so no one arrives unsure.

vi.

Ceremony details

Readings, music, flowers, and a clergy member or celebrant if you would like one. Gathered before the day, not on it.

vii.

A facilitator aboard

A Water & Ash facilitator runs the ceremony — readings, pacing, music — so the family can simply be present.

viii.

Certificate & coordinates

A printed certificate of committal with the exact GPS coordinates of the site, yours to keep.

ix.

Aftercare

A short call the following week. Not a sales touch — a check-in.

iv.

Built around your service

Full-service planning wraps around either ceremony.

It is quoted per family, because no two plans carry the same pieces. We will give you a flat number before you commit to anything.

Sea Burial

Full-Body Burial at Sea

A licensed funeral home prepares and transports the remains. We coordinate with them and carry everything on the water — the vessel, the committal three nautical miles offshore, and the EPA filing.

Common questions

A few of the things families ask first.

How is this different from booking a voyage?

Booking a voyage covers the day at sea. Full-service planning covers everything around it as well — the funeral home, the permits, the ceremony details, and the paperwork afterward — with Water & Ash as your one point of contact from the first call to the last.

Are you a funeral home?

No. We don't prepare remains or handle death certificates. For a full-body burial, a licensed funeral home must prepare and transport the remains — we work alongside them and take care of the voyage and the coordination around it.

Do we need a funeral home for an ash scattering?

No. For ash scattering you can come to us directly, and we can plan the whole thing with you. If a funeral home is already handling other arrangements, we coordinate with them.

How is full-service planning priced?

It is quoted per family, because every plan carries different pieces. We will talk through what you need and give you a flat number before you commit to anything. No upsells.

How far in advance should we start?

For an ash scattering, a few days is often enough. For a full-body burial, plan for two to three weeks — there is paperwork to file, and we want to choose a calm-water day. If you need something sooner, call us; we will make it work where we can.

Can a clergy member or celebrant be part of it?

Of course. We have welcomed priests, rabbis, imams, ministers, humanist celebrants, and quiet families with no clergy at all. Tell us who you would like there, and we will plan around them.
